The Goomba Village theme from Paper Mario contains a remix of the Athletic theme from Super Mario World, at a very slow speed, so it may be difficult to discern when listening to the theme normally. Here, it is sped up by 200%, and immediately followed by the relevant excerpt from Super Mario World.

An extremely obscure cutscene exists in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door that can only be seen if the player owns 200 badges when recruiting Ms. Mowz.

Normally, Ms. Mowz gives Mario the Attack FX B badge upon joining his party. However, if Mario’s badge inventory is full (which happens at 200 badges, while there are only 85 unique ones, meaning the player has to grind for over 100 duplicate badges), she will instead leave the badge next to the badge shop for him to pick up later, with a corresponding unique cutscene and dialogue calling Mario “kind of rude”.

The Japanese soundtrack for the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf contains a series of renders of Mario performing a golf swing (top). I have combined these into an animation in the bottom image.

Top: The final Boss Key in Donkey Kong 64 is located in a room at the end of the Hideout Helm level. This Boss Key is actually glitched; it will only count as being collected if the camera is angled in such a way during the collection so that it is aligned with the portions of the walls highlighted in green.

Bottom left: example of good alignment. There is a direct line of sight from the camera to the green line through the key. Collecting it in this state works as intended.

Bottom right: example of bad alignment. By rotating the camera so that it faces away from the highlighted walls, the key will become glitched. Collecting it does not make it show up in the menu; the only way to actually obtain it is to exit the area, come back, and collect it while maintaining good alignment.

2002 German print ad for Super Mario Advance 2. The text on the bottom translates to “96 levels ahead of the others”. However, this is actually misleading, as Super Mario World/Super Mario Advance 2 does not actually contain 96 levels; instead, it merely contains 96 distinct level exits. The actual amount of levels in the game depends on whether single-screen areas are counted as levels, but is generally accepted to be between 73 to 76.

In Chapter 3 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, after Mario defeats the Magikoopa Masters at Rank 5 in the Glitz Pit, he is ambushed by Bowser appearing without any warning or foreshadowing (top left).

By this point in the game, nearly every boss battle started with a small line of text appearing on the bottom of the screen reading “Can’t flee this fight!” As the line is unobtrusive and expected by this point, it is very easy to overlook the fact that in this fight, it does not appear, and Mario actually has the choice to run from the battle (top right).

Doing so activates a unique scene of Bowser gloating over his win (middle row) and Grubba wondering about Bowser’s identity (bottom row). Interestingly, after this happens, there is neither any sort of penalty for losing to Bowser, nor does any character mention what happened. Bowser simply disappears and the game continues as normal. As such, if the player is interested in beating this part as quickly as possible, running from Bowser is actually the fastest way to end the battle.

In almost every 2D Super Mario platformer, the Super Mushroom is an item that cannot override higher-tier power-ups. If Fire Mario, having collected a more advanced power-up than a Super Mushroom, touches a Super Mushroom, he will not turn back into his Super Mario form; instead, he simply receives points and the mushroom disappears (e.g. in Super Mario Bros. 3) or the mushroom is added to a reserve item box (e.g. in Super Mario World).

The only exception to this is Super Mario Land 2. If Fire Mario or Bunny Mario (Mario’s two fully powered-up forms in that game) touch a Super Mushroom, Mario will lose the power-up and turn back into Super Mario. As this is functionally equivalent to taking a hit from an enemy, this is the only instance of a Super Mushroom directly harming Mario.
