An unused debug function in the code of Super Mario 64 allows Mario to fly around the environment. When active, Mario assumes a special pose with his arms at a 45 degree angle, and can be controlled to fly in any spatial direction at very high speeds (the footage is not sped up). However, even during this mode, Mario is not immune to out-of-bounds behavior. If he flies below the ground, he will die instantly.

An obscure way to achieve a Game Over outside of battle in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is to stand completely still and not do anything in one of the two scenes where Mario is swarmed by Dry Bones (inside Hooktail Castle and later in the Palace of Shadow). Since usually, the player would move around, this scene would not be activated. If the player does nothing, however, Mario will play his “pipe entering” animation into the ground, his partner will cry out, and the game will be over.

In Super Mario Odyssey, some of the kingdoms contain Power Moons obtainable by throwing Cappy at glowing birds. Usually, if the bird is scared off, the way to attempt this again is to walk away from the location and come back later once the bird respawns. However, there is a very quick way to respawn the bird. Simply enter first-person view mode, then look away and then back to the bird’s spawning point; the bird should have reappeared.

Top: in the code of Donkey Kong 64, there is an unused function that displays an “Ice Key” entry in the collection screen of the pause menu. The entry has no associated graphic.

Bottom: this is a remnant of planned Banjo-Kazooie/Donkey Kong 64 cross-compatibility that was cancelled during development. Banjo-Kazooie includes an Ice Key item that is obtainable with a code; the original plan was to let the Nintendo 64 hot-swap memory (memory left on the device after removing the cartridge) carry over the information about the Ice Key into Donkey Kong 64, unlocking extra content. However, this could not be implemented as newer models of Nintendo 64 consoles reduced the active duration of the hot-swap memory to 1 second, making it unfeasible for most players to swap the cartridges in time.
