In the Sinking Lava Spire mission of Melty Molten Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, if Mario loses his last segment of health at the same time as activating the cutscene of the spire beginning to sink, he will disappear. The cutscene will play as usual, except with the screen darkened the same way it is during Mario’s death animation. After the cutscene, Mario will be shown standing in his usual spawning point, and the death animation will finally activate despite Mario appearing completely normal.

The official reveal of Gooigi was in the trailer for the co-op mode in the Nintendo 3DS version of Luigi’s Mansion, published on September 13, 2018. However, Gooigi actually first appeared a month earlier, on August 8, 2018, in the reveal trailer for Simon and Richter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The trailer features Luigi fighting enemies from the Castlevania series; for this, he uses the Poltergust G-00, a preview of it being introduced in Luigi’s Mansion 3 a year later. Inside the Poltergust G-00, a green glowing substance can be seen. This is Gooigi’s form that he takes when he is inactive; thus, Gooigi’s earliest appearance was in this trailer.
