Top left: in Tall, Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64, there is a chance that one of the Goombas near the beginning of the course will become stuck at the edge of the water in an animation loop consisting of short hops. The Goomba is unable to break free from this loop and continue hopping indefinitely.

Top right: if Mario punches the Goomba in this state, instead of entering its hurt animation and then releasing a coin, the Goomba will simply disappear.

Bottom: this is due to the water of the river clipping slightly into the ground (note the triangle cutting into the riverbank) in such a way that it creates a small area where the Goomba constantly oscillates between being in water and on ground, resulting in the nonstandard behaviors.

Artwork of Mario dressed as Luke Skywalker and Luigi as Darth Vader from the Star Wars films shown in a comedy segment of an official 1997 Satellaview broadcast. The Satellaview was a Japan-only add-on for the Super Famicom that allowed it to receive satellite transmissions; while it is most commonly known for featuring games, it also offered shows that had live audio alongside a slideshow of pictures.

In Super Paper Mario, during the battle against Mr. L in Chapter 4-4, he will occasionally try to restore his health by using a Shroom Shake. It is possible to interrupt him during this by attacking him; however, if Thoreau’s ability is used, the player character will instead steal the Shroom Shake from Mr. L and add it to their inventory. This can be done a maximum of 3 times in the battle before Mr. L runs out of Shroom Shakes.

Mario’s behavior on platforms moving downward off-screen in Super Mario Bros. and in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (known internationally as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels) has been reversed in these games’ respective remakes in Super Mario All-Stars.

Top left: in the original Super Mario Bros., Mario dies when carried downward off-screen by a moving platform.

Top right: in the original Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Mario wraps around and falls from the top of the screen in that scenario.

Bottom left: however, in the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros., Mario wraps around instead.

Bottom right: conversely, in the Super Mario All-Stars version of the Lost Levels, he dies instead. The reason why the behaviors were swapped is unknown.

Unused animations for Mario’s skeleton found in the data of Super Mario Galaxy 2. In the finished game, Mario’s skeleton briefly replaces his regular model when he is hit with electricity and has no animations of its own; these animations suggest the skeleton model was intended to be used more prominently at some point during development.
