A 1989 Viewmaster reel for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show shows scenes of Wart attacking Mario and his friends, while referring to him as “King Koopa”. This suggests that during an early point in the cartoon’s production, Wart was considered as the main villain (as the story is roughly based on Super Mario Bros. 2, where he was the antagonist) before being replaced by King Koopa.

Top: in the data of Super Mario Party, this sketch of an early version of the Party Plaza main gate can be found. The file is called “Yeah Practice”.
Bottom: the gate in the finished version of the game, for comparison. The design was changed so that instead of having the decorations on the sides of the gate, they are now above it.

Top: in the prologue of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Professor Frankly briefly looks at the Magical Map after it is first activated. For this, he sets the map down on his table. The texture used for this can not be seen in-game clearly due to being at an oblique angle and too far away from the camera, but it shows the Magical Map completely filled out with all locations instead of in the empty state it should be at that point in the story.
Bottom: extracting the texture from the game’s files, we can see it does not match up perfectly with the finished map; instead, it appears to be an early version of it. Here is an animation comparing the two; the clearer image is the map used in-game while the pixelated one is Frankly’s texture. Some of the biggest differences include: no mountains in the Poshley Heights area in the lower right, a much bigger moon and X-Naut base in the top left, and a differently-colored ground in the Boggly Woods in the top middle.

In the international version of Super Mario 64, the star received from the mother penguin in the “Li’l Penguin Lost” mission of Cool Cool Mountain is off to the side of the pond, away from the penguins. In the Japanese version, however, the star spawns directly above the mother penguin. It is possible to cause Mario to clip inside the penguin when collecting the star, as shown in the footage. The star was likely moved before the international release to prevent this specific scenario.

In the Elevator Antics level of Donkey Kong Country, there is one set of elevators shortly after the checkpoint between a Zinger and a Klump. If one of the Kongs throws a steel keg at the wall to the right of the elevator, a glitch occurs where the Kong will enter the keg-riding animation without the keg being present. The Kong will automatically slide to the left and get caught on the ledge in the keg-riding animation as depicted. The glitch can be exited simply by jumping.

Top: in the intro to Yoshi’s Island, the Yoshis are gathered around Baby Mario. Note that each Yoshi has a different shoe color.
Middle row: However, after this scene, the unique shoe colors are never seen again. In-game, all Yoshis have the same orange-red shoes.
Bottom row: This is rectified in the Super Mario Advance 3 remake, where the Yoshis now have their shoe colors from the cutscene during gameplay, as well.

In Super Mario Bros., it is possible to cause Mario to die and clear a castle level at the same time by touching Bowser and the axe at the end of the level as Small Mario simultaneously. Both Bowser and Mario will fall offscreen, whereupon the screen will scroll to Toad or Princess Peach, who will then deliver their message as usual. The next level will then begin, with Mario not having lost any lives.

The Super Mario Bros. pinball machine by Gottlieb is notable for containing three different designs for Bowser in different places on the board. In addition to the King Koopa design from the cartoon series (bottom left), there is both a Super Mario World artwork of Bowser with red eyes (top right) as well as a Super Mario Bros. 3 artwork with blue eyes (bottom right).

In F-1 Race for the Game Boy, winning a race shows the player character driving by and waving at a variety of Nintendo characters, who then wave back. The Mario-related characters that appear are, in order of increasing difficulty of the races to see them, Toad, Luigi, Peach, Mario, Donkey Kong and Bowser.

In Level 3-Extra of Yoshi’s Island, there is a wheel of rotating platforms under a wall near the beginning of the level. A glitch allows Yoshi to pass through that wall by repeatedly taking very small steps left, away from the wall, as he is about to pass it. If the exploit is done correctly, Yoshi will touch his nose several times rapidly and pass through the wall. The underlying mechanic (pushing Yoshi right when he is facing left and inside a wall) is also the one responsible for the famous Minus World glitch in the original Super Mario Bros.
