Top: In Mario Kart 64, driving into the rotating Mario sign in Mario Raceway while using a Super Star will result in the sign flying into the sky. While this is hard to see from the perspective of the player driving into the sign, it can be more easily seen from a distance (note the sign flying upward on Luigi’s screen).

Bottom: Moving the camera allows us to follow the sign. The sign flies high above the track before being unloaded.

1. Games are being referred to by their prerelease titles instead of finalized names, such as “Yoshi’s Island 64″ for Yoshi’s Story and “Zelda 64″ for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
2. Looking at the list of games being promoted, as well as screenshots featured in the right column, we can see that Mario Kart 64 is not among either group. Thus, the ad uses a Mario Kart 64 background (Frappe Snowland) and a Mario Kart 64 render to advertise 13 other games, but not Mario Kart 64 itself.

Mario Kart 64 employs a trick to reduce the number of polygons required to be rendered onscreen by replacing objects with 2D sprites of them when they are far away. Once the player drives closer to the object, the 3D model is loaded.

In Mario Kart 64, there is a hidden second version of the results theme. After playing for 64 loops (over 50 minutes), the music changes to an alternative loop before restarting. This example starts with one standard loop and changes 50 seconds in.
