Unused track music found only in the kiosk demo version of Mario Kart DS, but not in the finished game. In the demo, it plays in tracks that are present in the data, but are not selectable through the menu, making it a placeholder. Its internal name is “CIRCUIT2″, suggesting it may have been originally meant for either the Figure-8 Circuit or Mario Circuit tracks.

In Mario Kart DS, a very simple sequence of actions, easily able to be performed entirely by accident, can result in the game freezing. If the player presses A, B and either Left or Right simultaneously on the front steps of the mansion in the Luigi’s Mansion track, the game will freeze. Note that this has been fixed in the Wii U Virtual Console version of the game and can only be performed on the original Nintendo DS cartridge.

Unused alternate version of the main menu theme from Mario Kart DS, found in the game’s data. This version is much calmer than the one used in the finished game.

The data for Mario Kart DS contains several unused early versions of the Waluigi Pinball track. While these are mainly the same save for missing textures, they have a completely different animation inside the launcher that catapults the drivers across the track near the starting line. Here is a looping animation of the inside of the unused Waluigi Pinball launcher.

The kiosk demo version of Mario Kart DS contained more tracks in its data than were actually available for players to select. One of those tracks was Shroom Ridge. By modifying the code to allow the track to be loaded, we can see that the Cheep Cheep delivery trucks, which in the finished game read “FRESH”, read “FLESH” in this early version of the track instead.

In the Mario Kart DS kiosk demo version, a Chain Chomp item appears in the item roulette (slowed down here for visibility), but is impossible to actually obtain, as the roulette never stops on it. The Chain Chomp item is absent in the game’s final release. (Footage recorded by me from a DS emulator.)
The files for Mario Kart DS contain two different animations for the Shine Sprite object. The one visible during normal gameplay in on the left. The version on the right - with a much higher amount of colors and smoother shading - exists in the data, but is not used.
