In Super Mario Galaxy, large bodies of water have a wave effect on their surface. However, this effect only covers a small, square area around Mario. In the top image, we can see the boundary between the wavy, refractive water and the rest of the water, which simply has a wave texture applied to it without actually moving. In the bottom image, by disabling the refraction and replacing it with a solid color, we can see how much area around Mario the effect covers.
