In the files of Super Mario 3D World, a sixth character icon as well as a sixth logo appear alongside the images for the five playable characters. These files are not referenced by the game’s code, and their purpose is unknown.

In 2015, Nintendo released a 2D design of Samurai Mario as part of the new artwork in the yearly Nintendo Calendar. Later, in 2016, a 3D model of Samurai Mario appeared in a promotional wallpaper for Super Mario Run. Making both a 2D and a 3D form of the same design seems like a considerable level of effort for something intended only for promotional material, which could suggest that Samurai Mario might be significant in the future.
Italian flag from the files of Mario Party 3. It is contained in all versions of the game, but isn’t used in any of them.
In Super Mario All-Stars, pressing Left and Right simultaneously (possible on some third-party controllers) in Super Mario Bros. results in Mario moving backwards extremely slowly. Doing it in Super Mario Bros. 3 results in Mario moving backwards extremely quickly. (Doing it in Super Mario Bros. 2 has no effect.)
