The Japanese-only The Legend of Zelda spin-off “Ripened Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love” for the Nintendo DS, a sequel to the Japan/Europe-only “Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland”, contains a segment where one of the four playable characters must be chosen for a minigame (top). This screen’s graphics are taken directly from the character select screen from Super Mario Bros. 2 (bottom).

The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe handles Mario’s power-up state differently from the international versions. While in those, Mario is reset to Small Mario every time a save file is reloaded, in the Japanese version, Mario keeps the power-up he had when the game was saved.

This leads to a glitch where saving on a specific frame of Mario’s damage animation after being hit as Fire Mario, then quitting and reloading, results in the game loading an “in-between” state that appears as Small Fire Mario (top). Small Fire Mario can still shoot fire, although it comes out of the space above him as though he was regular Fire Mario. Collecting any power-up in this state turns him into regular Fire Mario (bottom left) while taking any damage kills him (bottom right).

The data for Mario Kart DS contains several unused early versions of the Waluigi Pinball track. While these are mainly the same save for missing textures, they have a completely different animation inside the launcher that catapults the drivers across the track near the starting line. Here is a looping animation of the inside of the unused Waluigi Pinball launcher.

Top: in Super Mario 64, normally, whenever a text box appears on screen, it freezes the movement of non-Mario objects as long as it is displayed. In particular, coins stop spinning; shown with the coin to the right of the sign.

Bottom: however, when grabbing the Ukiki on top of Tall, Tall Mountain, the coins in the background do not stop spinning. This is in fact the only text box in the game to not freeze time for objects in this manner, as it uses slightly different code to be displayed than any other text box.
