Comparison between the title screen of the Japanese Mario Open Golf and its North American version, NES Open Tournament Golf. A few changes have been made to the characters during the localization process. Most notably, Mario and Luigi’s head shapes were changed, their irises were colored in, Luigi was given more hair, Peach’s hair was edited, and Daisy’s lower body was moved away from Luigi. (Screenshots taken by me in a NES emulator.)
Comparison between the plaque in the courtyard in Super Mario 64 (left) and the plaque in Dodongo’s Cavern in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (right). The texture of the Dodongo’s Cavern plaque is a minimally edited version of the Super Mario 64 plaque texture.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, entering the bonus room through a pipe on Starship Mario and talking to one of the Salesman Lumas from behind will result in the camera rotating in a way that reveals that the bonus room has no front wall and is instead out in the open, which
should be impossible given its purported location inside Starship Mario. (Footage recorded by me using a Wii emulator.)
New Super Mario Bros. contains two versions of the Super Mario Bros. Small Mario sprite. The one used in one of the bottom screen backgrounds (left) is accurate. The one used in the bonus room backgrounds (right) has a few differences, such as a pixel missing from Mario’s nose and his mustache extending further downwards and forwards. The reasons for including two different renditions of the same sprite are unknown.
