In November 2004, 1.5 years before the release of New Super Mario Bros., an early gameplay clip was shown to the press. The only description of this clip comes from an article by Nintendo World Report writer Chris Martino, who states that the clip contained footage of a playable Bowser (highlighted in the image).
No recording of this clip exists, and no trace of a playable Bowser remains in the finished game, even among its unused content in the data. If the report is accurate, this must mean that the idea of a playable Bowser must have been scrapped early in development and completely expunged from the files.

For an unknown reason, two unrelated British publications both created their own version of “Small Penguin Mario” artwork for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Small Penguin Mario does not actually exist; for this, both magazines edited artwork of Mario inside artwork of a Penguin Suit. Note that official artwork for regular Penguin Mario does exist and it is unclear why the magazines chose not merely to not use it but to create their own by splicing different assets.

Sad portraits of Mario and Luigi used when they lose a match in the Mario Vs. Luigi mode in New Super Mario Bros. As this mode requires another Nintendo DS system to play, players with access to only one system are unable to see these portraits.

Unused movement function found in the files of New Super Mario Bros., causing Mario to assume his Mini Mario physics while being normally sized. This results in Mario skipping instead of running, moving as though in slow motion (the footage has not been slowed down).

In the code of New Super Mario Bros., an unused object can be found that presents an invisible hazard. Floating hands point out its position, but touching it kills Mario. This was likely unused due to the hands appearing to point out something of interest and the player being compelled to touch it, resulting in a death that would feel unfair to the player.

In New Super Mario Bros., World 7-A contains the game’s only appearance of Squigglers, juvenile Wigglers (top). Squigglers are unique among the game’s enemies in that instead of being fully modeled or fully sprited, their heads are modeled while their body segments are sprites. Thus, the model for the Squiggler consists only of its head (bottom).
