In the code of New Super Mario Bros., an unused object can be found that presents an invisible hazard. Floating hands point out its position, but touching it kills Mario. This was likely unused due to the hands appearing to point out something of interest and the player being compelled to touch it, resulting in a death that would feel unfair to the player.

In New Super Mario Bros., World 7-A contains the game’s only appearance of Squigglers, juvenile Wigglers (top). Squigglers are unique among the game’s enemies in that instead of being fully modeled or fully sprited, their heads are modeled while their body segments are sprites. Thus, the model for the Squiggler consists only of its head (bottom).

On the World 4 map in New Super Mario Bros., whenever Mario takes the unlockable path between W4-1 and the Green Mushroom House, he will walk backwards on the left portion of the path, changing his walking direction at the corner. This is the only path in the game this happens on.
