In Super Mario Sunshine, a glitch allows Mario to swim in lava. After the first platform with a 1-Up Mushroom in Corona Mountain, being hit by the Lava Cheep Cheep when it is close to the lava surface will drop Mario into the lava while bypassing the instant death zone. In this state, Mario can swim under the lava, but touching the surface again will immediately cause him to die. (Footage recorded by me in a GC emulator.)
During the ending to Mario Party 7, Bowser and Koopa Kid fall onto an island. Moving the camera during this scene reveals that Player 1′s character is standing behind the palm tree in the middle of the island, hidden from view.
Getting a Star in all three slots in the Shy Guy’s Toy Box slot machine in Paper Mario results in the machine dispensing ten Mushrooms. However, the Mushrooms will vanish so quickly that it is almost impossible to collect all of them in time. (Footage recorded by me in a N64 emulator.)
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Luigi’s ghost that can be challenged to a race after beating a mission as Luigi will fly without Fluzzard’s help on flying missions, as well as continue flying through unloaded portions of the galaxy despite being out of view. Following Luigi’s ghost with the camera in Wild Glide Galaxy shows him flying alone through vast stretches of empty space. (Footage recorded by me in a Wii emulator.)
The prerelease build of Super Mario 64 showcased at the Shoshinkai 1995 expo contained a feature absent from the finished game: automatically regenerating health. In this footage, we can see that after taking fall damage and reducing his health to 4, Mario regenerates health at a rate of one unit every few seconds until it is 8 again. (Source)
