In the data of Yoshi’s Story, an unused song can be found that starts with the same jingle as the existing world map tracks. This makes it likely that at some point in development, the game was planned to have seven worlds.

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario casts his shadow in a different direction from all other characters. While non-playable characters have a shadow that conforms to the light source present in the area and thus is cast at a realistic angle, Mario’s shadow is always cast straight down, as though he was lit from directly above. In addition, Mario’s shadow is much darker than all other shadows.

The files for Mario Kart DS contain two different animations for the Shine Sprite object. The one visible during normal gameplay in on the left. The version on the right - with a much higher amount of colors and smoother shading - exists in the data, but is not used.
