In Super Mario Odyssey, some of the kingdoms contain Power Moons obtainable by throwing Cappy at glowing birds. Usually, if the bird is scared off, the way to attempt this again is to walk away from the location and come back later once the bird respawns. However, there is a very quick way to respawn the bird. Simply enter first-person view mode, then look away and then back to the bird’s spawning point; the bird should have reappeared.

Top: in the code of Donkey Kong 64, there is an unused function that displays an “Ice Key” entry in the collection screen of the pause menu. The entry has no associated graphic.

Bottom: this is a remnant of planned Banjo-Kazooie/Donkey Kong 64 cross-compatibility that was cancelled during development. Banjo-Kazooie includes an Ice Key item that is obtainable with a code; the original plan was to let the Nintendo 64 hot-swap memory (memory left on the device after removing the cartridge) carry over the information about the Ice Key into Donkey Kong 64, unlocking extra content. However, this could not be implemented as newer models of Nintendo 64 consoles reduced the active duration of the hot-swap memory to 1 second, making it unfeasible for most players to swap the cartridges in time.

The music that plays in the Sunken Ship in Super Mario RPG has the creaking of the ship embedded into the music. The SNES sound format has 8 channels of samples that play simultaneously; one of the channels is dedicated to the creaking sounds. By modifying the code to only play the other 7 channels, we can remove the creaking from the music, resulting in this “clean” version.

The model used for Bowser in the intro to Super Mario 3D World, where his lower half is inside the Clear Pipe. The in-game appearance can be seen in the bottom left. Interestingly, the official Prima guide for the game contained a shot of this scene from the pre-release version (bottom right), giving a clearer view of the tubular portion of Bowser’s body.
