The Prima guide for Super Mario 3D World contains a screenshot of what seems to be an early version of the intro cutscene. Below is the same frame of the cutscene in the finished version. Top: the shadow Mario casts in Super Mario Sunshine is made out of flattened polygons spread across the ground. Since it is always rendered at the same resolution Mario is, it enables the shadow to remain crisp at any zoom level.

Bottom: In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario’s shadow is calculated from Mario’s model for every frame in a fixed resolution. This makes it appear pixelated when it is close to the camera.

Top: The deformation applied to Mario’s model in Super Mario 64 two frames before being squashed by a Thwomp.
