Top: in Super Mario Galaxy, the Comet Luma’s star wands have a white glow. However, the glow is obscuring a unique graphical effect.
Bottom: by removing the glow, we can see that the wands distort the image of whatever is behind them. This effect is not seen anywhere else in the game, and is completely hidden by the glow during regular gameplay. It is possible that the designers decided that the effect looked too bizarre and placed the glow effect there specifically to hide it, as that would be easier than to change the code of the wand object.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, if the game is paused during a door screen transition just before the door closes, then Up, B and A are pressed simultaneously on Player 2′s controller, the player character will fall through the floor and die. When the level reloads, the player character will again immediately fall through the floor and die, and continue doing this until no lives remain and the game is over.

Normally, whenever Mario captures enemies in Super Mario Odyssey, their eyes change to resemble Mario’s; e.g. with Goombas and Paragoombas, their usually small pupils gain blue irises. However, a glitch will cause their eyes to revert to normal while Mario is still controlling them. If a captured Paragoomba is made to land on a fence in the Cap Kingdom, after a few seconds, its blue irises will disappear.

Top: In Super Mario Galaxy, cubes of dark matter appear in Bowser’s Dark Matter Plant that appear to show a cloud or nebula texture when platforms move over them (right side of the image). The game does not allow first-person view to be entered near them, preventing a closer look.
Middle: this is what the dark matter looks like up close, in-game.
Bottom: however, the game shows only a filtered and distorted version of the actual texture file found in the data. Extracting it, we can see it is a very colorful nebula texture, tileable both horizontally and vertically.

The demo consists of rooms that show off various graphical effects that the system is capable of performing, such as anti-aliasing, reflection mapping, and local lighting. In Super Mario 64, Mario has a special death animation for being squashed, such as by a Thwomp. However, if Mario happens to enter his regular death animation, used e.g. when being hit by a Goomba, underneath a Thwomp, then the Thwomp will end up repeatedly resetting the animation before it can complete, trapping Mario in a looping death animation. As the pause menu cannot be opened during this, the game must be reset to escape.

Official 1989 Super Mario Bros. 2 character sheet given to companies obtaining a Mario license by Nintendo of America for reference. Besides characters and items directly from the game, it also contains the original “Stop Watch” character that exists only in select pieces of North American licensed material, such as greeting cards and one issue of the Valiant Super Mario Bros. comics. Its game equivalent is the Stop Watch item that looks like an ordinary watch.

In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, selecting a Double Dip menu option at the same time Mario’s partner dies from an item thrown by the audience can result in the battle menu appearing with a distorted perspective. Finalizing a selection while the glitch is active will crash the game and bring up the internal debug screen in the manner shown.
