In Mario Kart DS, a very simple sequence of actions, easily able to be performed entirely by accident, can result in the game freezing. If the player presses A, B and either Left or Right simultaneously on the front steps of the mansion in the Luigi’s Mansion track, the game will freeze. Note that this has been fixed in the Wii U Virtual Console version of the game and can only be performed on the original Nintendo DS cartridge.

Unused 8-bit version of the “Rocket Run” music from Donkey Kong Country 3, found in the data of Donkey Kong Land 3. Since Donkey Kong Land 3 does not have the Rocket Barrel that was used in the original game when this song played, there is no level it would be used in. The existence of a remix of this song suggests, however, that at some point in development a level with the Rocket Barrel was planned.

A glitch in Snowman’s Land in Super Mario 64 can result in Mario being very briefly controllable after dying. In the area with the moving snow triangles, whenever a large triangle is descending below ground, an out of bounds area is briefly created at the edge of the platform. Jumping there at a precise moment will kill Mario instantly, activating the Bowser fade-out (whenever Mario dies due to being out of bounds, his hat disappears to indicate this).
However, the out of bounds area disappears quickly after, resulting in Mario being controllable again despite the death fade-out being active. Until Bowser’s face fully eclipses the screen, Mario can move around freely.

Top left: in the Kitchen observatory dome in Super Mario Galaxy, a comet can be seen passing by a planet through the window. This can not be seen up close in-game, as the camera cannot be moved inside domes.
Top right: the texture for the comet, extracted from the game’s files.
Bottom: this texture is actually a modified version of a real-world scientific photograph, taken by NASA in 1986. It depicts Halley’s Comet, a comet that periodically visits the solar system every 75-76 years. The next appearance of Halley’s Comet will be in 2061 or 2062.

Officially licensed 2004 Super Mario Bros. clock from Japan. Note that the seconds hand is a Firebar; as it makes a full turn once a minute, the clock resembles a scene from one of the game’s castle levels.
