The water in Super Mario Sunshine is not in fact transparent. The surface of the water is overlaid with a snapshot of what’s under it, then that picture is distorted to simulate rippling. By disabling the game’s ability to create snapshots of the screen, we can see the true appearance of the water: black and opaque.
