Top: the Satellaview was a Japan-only add-on for the Super Famicom that allowed it to receive satellite transmissions. Some Mario-related games received versions only available for a limited time through the Satellaview service. The Satellaview version of Wario’s Woods replaced Birdo with a human character (top right corner).
Bottom: this character is actually one of the two selectable player avatars from the Satellaview main menu. Many Satellaview games used different interpretations of the avatar characters; this particular design appears in one other game and some artwork, which are shown here.

In Super Mario Odyssey, when Mario has one unit of health remaining, he will assume a pained idle animation whenever he is not moving. Unlike most circumstancial idle animations, this one has no waiting period before starting after Mario finishes moving. In other words, if many small inputs are made sequentially, Mario will rapidly switch between regular walking and his low-health idle animation in the manner depicted.

Unused music found in the data of Donkey Kong Land, intended for the skyscraper levels in the Big Ape City world. In the finished game, these levels use different music instead.

In Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario does not immediately die when his health reaches 0; he must also not be in mid-air. This means that for as long as Mario is falling after being hit, even if the hit reduced his health to 0, he is still alive and can recover health by collecting coins. In practice, this means that if Mario is knocked backwards into a coin after dying in the manner depicted, he will revive with 1 health afterward (note the health display in the upper right).

Unlicensed Super Mario 64 “marble adventure” game from Japan. The game consists of a four-segment plastic board with moving pieces activated by buttons and levers. These are used to push or toss a metal ball through a variety of obstacles.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, usually, whenever a message must be displayed that does not exist in the data, the game returns the text “No messages. [English]”.
However, there is one exception. If Goombella is hacked into the very first battle against Lord Crump (note the presence of two Goombellas: the non-combatant one that is supposed to be there, and the partner, who is hacked in), her tattle for Lord Crump will read non-text data from the game’s files and interpret it as a jumble of characters.

Top: in Super Mario Bros. 3, the airship levels sway up and down. This is not merely a visual effect, but is intended to represent the airship physically moving up and down. This is evidenced by the projectiles, like Bullet Bills, moving up and down relative to the ship, as they move in a straight line while everything else rises and falls around them.
Bottom: in the Super Mario Maker games, this aspect is lost. While the airship theme does feature the same swaying camera, the effect is now purely visual. The Bullet Bills do not move up and down relative to the ship any longer.

In Super Mario 64, touching the space underneath the wall near the beginning segment of Whomp’s Fortress in the manner depicted will cause Mario to instantaneously transport upward to the top of that wall, saving him from dying due to falling.

During the 1990s, Sega’s marketing often included jabs at Nintendo and Mario in particular. In an E3 1996 trailer for Sonic X-Treme, text reading “Mario Who?” appears at the end, followed by an actor dressed up as Mario saying “Sega” in an exasperated manner. Sonic X-Treme was never released.
