Concept art for unused outfit designs for Super Mario Odyssey, seen in the 2018 Nintendo employee handbook. While some of these, like the knight, caveman, clown etc. were used in the finished game after being redesigned, some others, like the Yoshi and Donkey Kong costumes, were left out completely. Interestingly, these drawings do not appear in the Art of Super Mario Odyssey book despite it featuring hundreds of other outfit sketches, being exclusive to the employee handbook.

In Yoshi’s Island, under very specific circumstances, a Piranha Plant that has captured Yoshi can begin to slide across the ground. In Level 2-2, a Little Mouser carrying an egg falls down a narrow hole. That particular egg is glitched; if Yoshi is able to grab it from the Little Mouser at the same time it falls down (seen at the beginning of the footage), the egg can result in unintended behavior when thrown. If that egg is then used to hit a Piranha Plant on the same frame as Yoshi is swallowed by it, the sliding animation occurs.

Top: the boss Manhandla from the NES The Legend of Zelda is described in the North American manual as a “large man-eating flower”.

Middle: however, this omits a Super Mario Bros. reference from the original Japanese version of the manual, which calls it (translated) “a four-limbed, jumbo-sized Piranha Plant”. The words “Piranha Plant” are marked in yellow.

Bottom: the Piranha Plant banner from the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate website providing an example of the name in Japanese; compare this to the marked text. It is unknown why the North American manual dropped the reference; possibly, the translator was not familiar with Super Mario Bros. and simply did not recognize it.

Drawings of various Hollywood actors portraying Mario (top: Harrison Ford, middle: Jean-Claude Van Damme, bottom: Bruce Willis), from a 1996 comedy broadcast for the Satellaview. The Satellaview was a Japan-only add-on for the Super Famicom that allowed it to receive satellite transmissions; while it is most commonly known for featuring games, it also offered shows that had live audio alongside a slideshow of pictures.
