The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe handles Mario’s power-up state differently from the international versions. While in those, Mario is reset to Small Mario every time a save file is reloaded, in the Japanese version, Mario keeps the power-up he had when the game was saved.

This leads to a glitch where saving on a specific frame of Mario’s damage animation after being hit as Fire Mario, then quitting and reloading, results in the game loading an “in-between” state that appears as Small Fire Mario (top). Small Fire Mario can still shoot fire, although it comes out of the space above him as though he was regular Fire Mario. Collecting any power-up in this state turns him into regular Fire Mario (bottom left) while taking any damage kills him (bottom right).
