Top: in the demo version of Donkey Kong 64 playable at E3 1999, Donkey Kong’s coconut gun had a much more realistic design, resembling a double-barreled shotgun. While still images of this design were published in many video game outlets at the time, video footage of it is only available on a promotional VHS tape from the Spanish Hobby Consolas magazine.
Bottom: additional footage shows that despite the realistic design, the gun still shot coconuts even in that version.

Unused music found in the data for the June 2004 Japanese demo of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (then known as Paper Mario 2). The track’s internal filename is BGM_EVT_NOK1, which can be deciphered as “background music for an event in Petalburg”, since the Petalburg area has an internal code of “NOK”. The music is not found in the game’s finished version.

Top: the “Near Miss” sound effect in Super Mario Maker 2 includes a visual element that appears to be an extremely fast round black object with red glowing dots shooting across the screen. During normal gameplay, the object moves too quickly to be seen clearly.
Middle: footage of the effect slowed down, allowing us to see that that the red details are actually two eyes and a mouth.
Bottom: a still frame of the effect, zoomed in.

Concept art sketch of Dr. Mario being burned by fire for the North American commercial for Dr. Mario on the NES/Game Boy. The sketch was unused; while Dr. Mario does appear in front of a fire background in the commercial, he dances instead of being burned.

In Paper Mario, there is a slot machine in the section to the right of the Green Station in Shy Guy’s Toy Box. If a battle is started in front of the slot machine, it will appear in the background of the battle screen. However, instead of being merely a decorative prop, it is actually interactive.
Pressing Up while targeting the enemies will move the cursor to the blocks of the slot machine. By attacking the Start block first, it will start spinning. Then, attacking the Stop blocks stops them on a random symbol. If all three symbols match, 30 coins will be added to the player’s coin total.

The size of the Super Mario Bros. ROM is around 31 kilobytes. This scan of the game’s cover, saved at a resolution of 92x138 with standard PNG compression, is the same size. In other words, the entire game’s code would fit in the same storage space as this image.
