In Super Mario Sunshine, Lava Cheep Cheeps appear on Corona Mountain. In-game, they are engulfed in flames and can only be seen from a distance (left), making it difficult to distinguish their features.
Extracting the model from the game (middle) shows that the Lava Cheep Cheeps have flower-shaped pupils. These are a reference to the Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos, where the dead are commemorated, and are often depicted with flowers in their eyes; suggesting the Lava Cheep Cheeps are already dead, which is why they are able to swim in lava.
The exact same reference and flower-shaped pupils were used later for the Tostarenans in Super Mario Odyssey (right).

In the files of Super Mario Galaxy, an unused object called “Mario Launcher Attractor” exists that has the effect of altering Mario’s path after being shot out of a cannon. A unique particle effect surrounds Mario and he follows a set path through space, which can be curved. This could have been intended to provide an alternative way of traveling between planetoids - as the game makes extensive use of Launch Stars and a different method could have been intended to be included for variety.

While Mario is best known for his iconic cap with the “M” emblem and Donkey Kong for his tie with the “DK” emblem, Nintendo has released official merchandise of “reversed” versions of these items: a tie with a Mario emblem and a cap with a Donkey Kong emblem.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Whomp King’s hitbox does not behave correctly when he stands up, leading to him being able to defeat Mario or Luigi while they are descending from his back simply by standing up, as shown in the footage.

In Super Mario Maker 2, when playing as Link, his shield seemingly cannot be used while he is riding in a Goomba’s Shoe. However, this is only true on land. For an unknown reason, he can use his shield while riding the shoe underwater. This is not explained anywhere in the guides and is the only situational Goomba’s Shoe-related ability in the game.

In Super Mario 64, if an effect removes Mario’s cap while he has a cap power-up, like the Wing Cap, the cap will disappear when the power-up runs out. However, if Mario is in the middle of a conversation with an NPC at the time, the cap will remain for as long as Mario is on screen. Here, Mario’s cap is stolen by Klepto, but disappears only after the camera cuts away and back, creating the impression that it was stolen while the camera was not looking at Mario.
