Before the jump function was assigned to A, it was mapped to Up on the D-Pad, similar to the Super Smash Bros. series. The A button was instead used for an “Attack” function that was removed in the final game.

In Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Yoshis can be found on the sides of several tracks. Randomly, some of the Yoshis will hum a melody that is barely audible when the player drives past them. The melody is actually Totaka’s Song, a short tune present in nearly all soundtracks Kazumi Totaka, Yoshi’s voice actor and longtime Nintendo composer, worked on. The Yoshis hum the melody three times in slightly different ways before looping. This sound file was extracted from the game’s files and consists of two full loops.

Extremely rare high-resolution version of official Wario artwork from Mario Tennis, found in an issue of the Spanish Magazine 64. While the racket has been edited out of Wario’s hand, most of the artwork is intact. In the upper right corner is the highest-resolution version of the full artwork, including the racket, that is currently available. The magazine version is several times larger and allows us to see more detail on Wario’s face.

Scene from a commercial for the New Nintendo 3DS XL showing the functionality of the C-Stick to move the camera, featuring Mario and Luigi. Of interest here is the blackboard, which depicts the musical staff for the Song of Time from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, particularly the version of it used in the remake, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, where the lowest two notes (A and C-Down in the original, L and R in the remake) are represented by squares instead of by circles.

Top: before the final battle in Super Mario Odyssey, a wedding cake with cake toppers depicting Bowser and Peach can be seen in the background. However, approaching it activates the cutscene leading to the battle, after which the cake disappears. Thus, it is not possible to get close to the cake to see the toppers.

Middle and bottom: Extracting the model for the cake from the game’s files allows us to take a closer look at the figurines.

In Paper Mario, it is possible to lock the game into a cutscene indefinitely by boarding the train in Toad Town after entering the area with Sushie and repeatedly pressing C-Down on the way to the train. With every press of C-Down, Sushie falls behind Mario slightly. If Sushie is far enough from Mario when he boards the train, the game will wait for her to board but be unable to calculate a path for her to take towards the train. This results in Mario waiting for Sushie at the train forever. The only way to exit this locked state is to reset the game.
