In Paper Mario: The Origami King, when Mario ascends the Sea Tower for the first time before beating the area’s boss, the outside sections of the tower feature Toads stuck to the wall, being held up with sticky tape. The Toads make distressed sounds when Mario passes them. The sounds are not actually sound effects being played individually (as voices are usually handled by the engine), but a music track in the game’s soundtrack, called “Troubled Toads”. Here is a loop of it in its entirety.

Top: In Paper Mario: Color Splash, the top of Daffodil Peak contains a cardboard cutout of a yellow Toad with his face replaced with a circular hole.

Bottom: In Paper Mario: The Origami King, the plot of the yellow streamer area revolves around the villainous Hole Punch removing the faces of yellow Toads. The Toads with the removed faces look identical to the cardboard cutout from Paper Mario: Color Splash, which, considering Paper Mario: The Origami King contains other references to it, is likely a deliberate reference.

Top: in Paper Mario: The Origami King, after destroying the purple streamer on top of the Sea Tower, the green streamer is revealed to have been behind it all along, which is pointed out by Olivia.

Bottom: this is actually foreshadowed very briefly beforehand. In the cutscene of Mario and Olivia arriving at the top of the tower, there is one shot where a small bit of the green streamer can be seen at the top of the screen behind a cloud for a few seconds before the camera angle changes.

Top: In the trailer for Paper Mario: The Origami King, Mario wears a helmet modeled after Samus’s helmet from the Metroid series.

Bottom: however, this is not the first time the series have been cross-referenced. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, a Paper Mario sticker is unlockable by letting the game detect a save file for Super Paper Mario on the system.
