In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Bowser is able to use the abilities of all partners if the code is modified to have them be present in the scene with him. While he has no special animations for the abilities, they function correctly.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the partner pathfinding algorithm sometimes results in Mario leaving his partner behind after changing elevation (such as jumping from a high platform). During this, if the partner is off-screen, that character will be stuck in the animation shown in this footage. The partner will slide back and forth without walking above Mario’s position. Moving Mario far enough away or pressing X to activate the partner’s ability will teleport the partner to Mario, ending this.

Unused music found in the data for the June 2004 Japanese demo of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (then known as Paper Mario 2). The track’s internal filename is BGM_EVT_NOK1, which can be deciphered as “background music for an event in Petalburg”, since the Petalburg area has an internal code of “NOK”. The music is not found in the game’s finished version.

During Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario’s body is stolen by Doopliss, who spends a portion of the chapter in Mayor Dour’s house in Twilight Town, along with Mario’s partners. During this time, the mayor’s normally empty table has food on it. This is difficult to see due to the partners obscuring the table; particularly, Koops is standing in front of a unique roast pig dish that only appears during this scene (the other food can also be found in Ishnail’s house in Rogueport). Below are close-ups of the pig.

Top: in the prologue of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Professor Frankly briefly looks at the Magical Map after it is first activated. For this, he sets the map down on his table. The texture used for this can not be seen in-game clearly due to being at an oblique angle and too far away from the camera, but it shows the Magical Map completely filled out with all locations instead of in the empty state it should be at that point in the story.

Bottom: extracting the texture from the game’s files, we can see it does not match up perfectly with the finished map; instead, it appears to be an early version of it. Here is an animation comparing the two; the clearer image is the map used in-game while the pixelated one is Frankly’s texture. Some of the biggest differences include: no mountains in the Poshley Heights area in the lower right, a much bigger moon and X-Naut base in the top left, and a differently-colored ground in the Boggly Woods in the top middle.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, whenever the inside of one of the buildings in Rogueport (and other towns) is loaded, the outside becomes completely dark. The collision of the outside area is still mostly loaded, but all objects become invisible.

By using glitches to move out of a building when it is loaded and the outside is dark, it is possible to make Mario go down a Warp Pipe while it is invisible. This allows us to see the entirety of Mario’s animation for going down the pipe without the pipe itself obstructing it. Mario twirls inside the pipe, becoming smaller and smaller until the area is unloaded.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Princess Peach can enter the room to the left of her starting point in all her gameplay segments, where she is able to take a shower. While showering, she will randomly hum one of three short tunes, which are extracted here from the game’s data. The first one is the Super Mario Bros. main theme, the second one is the Super Mario Bros. water theme, and the last one is the Super Mario 64 Peach’s Castle theme.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario needs to enter the freight car of the Excess Express at two points during the story. At all other times, the entrance is blocked by the train’s conductor.

However, it is possible to enter the freight car at any time even when the conductor is blocking it by jumping towards the door and pressing A on a specific frame when the exclamation point appears over Mario’s head.

The developers used a simple technique where by adding the conductor to the door, his dialogue activation overrides the door opening function of the A button. However, they neglected to consider that Mario can only initiate dialogue when on the ground, while he can open doors for a few frames also while jumping. Thus, jumping creates a short window where the dialogue function doesn’t override the door opening function.

Zooming out the camera to see the entirety of the hotel at once, we can see that the room is floating high above the actual building, to account for the length of the elevator ride.
