The 1992 Super Mario Bros. pinball machine featured a voice for Mario that sounds very similar to Charles Martinet’s later portrayal of him. A currently unverified story by a poster on the Pinside pinball forums claims that the poster asked Charles Martinet about it in person, and that Martinet had claimed that it was in fact his voice, using an earlier portrayal of Mario.

While Martinet only started voicing Mario in games with Mario’s Game Gallery in 1994, he had been voicing Mario as part of the Mario In Real Time interactive experiences at Nintendo trade shows since 1991. According to the poster, Martinet claimed that the lines used in the pinball machine were recorded from an early Mario In Real Time session where the voice was not finalized, and used without his knowledge or permission, as well as without him being credited. Martinet has not commented publicly on this matter.
