In Super Mario 64 DS, there is a specific slope near the fenced-in giant Goomba on the large version of Tiny-Huge Island that has the unique property of making Mario walk backwards if he walks slowly on it without slipping for a certain amount of time. At first, Mario will slow down to a halt before starting to walk backwards in the manner shown in the footage.

In Super Mario 64 DS, with extremely precise positioning, it is possible to clip through the seams between any two arbitrary floor polygons as long as they are both not on an incline; in other words, this works on absolutely every piece of flat ground in the game. As such, there is a minuscule chance at all times during regular gameplay that the player character might fall through the ground in a random spot.

In Super Mario 64 DS, it is possible to skip the 30-Star door in Peach’s Castle as Luigi by catching a rabbit in the drained tunnel in the basement, then running into a space between it and the wall.
Talking to the rabbit from that space will push Luigi into the wall, from where he can walk and jump up the seams of various walls while still remaining out of bounds. Finally, Luigi can reach a high enough spot from where he can perform a spin jump towards the Dire, Dire Docks entrance.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi eats a Super Mushroom while a Thwomp stomps him, a glitch will occur whereby three events will happen to Yoshi in order: first, he will grow giant while inside the Thwomp, then he will become squashed immediately after his growing animation ends, and finally he will clip through the ground and die.

In Super Mario 64 DS, the speed with which Bowser can be spun around by his tail is limited to 1 full rotation in 16 frames. If the game’s code is modified to allow him to be spun faster, it is revealed that doing so will cause him to slowly sink into the ground the faster he spins, which may have been a factor that contributed to limiting the speed.

In Super Mario 64 DS, the internal name for the texture of one of the star decorations used inside the Tall, Tall Mountain secret slide is misspelled, with the image being called “ster” instead of “star”.

Top: in the background of the North American box art for Super Mario 64 DS, Peach’s Castle can be seen.
Bottom: however, that is not the castle from the actual game. Instead, this is a completely different design of the castle, taken from the Mario Circuit track in Mario Kart: Double Dash. The same goes for the Power Star, which has a mouth in the artwork like the Star item from Mario Kart: Double Dash; while the Power Stars in-game have no mouths.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if the player enters Shifting Sand Land as Yoshi, chooses Mario’s cap on the course intro screen so that Yoshi transforms into Mario at the start of the course, and picks up a crate, the game will crash if Klepto the condor touches Yoshi/Mario (note the footage freezing at that point; in addition, a high-pitched sound is emitted from the console until it is forcibly turned off).
As this sequence of actions is relatively easy to perform organically during regular gameplay, Nintendo patched out this glitch on all subsequent printings of the cartridge, but it can still be encountered on the first print run.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, if Mario (or any other playable character) catches on fire by touching one of the torches next to the Lethal Lava Land painting and enters it on the frame where his health is reduced to 0, he will have 0 health upon entering the level, causing him to die instantly.
While in the original game, he will play the burning animation, in Super Mario 64 DS, the code was changed slightly so that Mario plays an animation of being hit from behind and then dying.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi enters Tall, Tall Mountain and selects the Luigi cap upon entering, then grabs Ukiki while in Vanish Luigi form and jumps into water holding Ukiki so that the Vanish Luigi state runs out while he is in mid-air, then Yoshi’s Luigi form will become glitched. The next time he becomes Vanish Luigi, he will look like this, with only his body becoming see-through, while his head remains normal.
