In Super Mario Bros. 2, it is not normally possible to carry two enemies at a time. However, if a Stop Watch item (which appears whenever the player character would pluck the fifth large vegetable in an area) is used near a Shy Guy riding an Ostro, then picking up the Shy Guy while time has stopped will pick up the Ostro with it, resulting in the player character holding two enemies at once.

Throwing them also throws both at once as seen in the footage, while letting the Stop Watch effect run out results in the Shy Guy remaining held while the Ostro breaks free from the character’s grasp.

Bizarre officially licensed 1989 children’s shoes that, despite being branded with “The Legend of Zelda”, feature a small illustration of Peach throwing an egg at a small blue creature from a flying carpet (top and middle).

The creature is actually obscure off-model artwork of Birdo from collectible Super Mario Bros. 2 scratch-off cards (bottom), recolored blue. Presumably, Birdo’s unusual appearance here is a result of the artist interpreting the character as a literal bird, including wing-like arms.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, if the final battle against Wart is fought by Luigi, it is possible for him to jump on top of the ceiling of the arena to deal the final hit to Wart from off-screen. After Wart is defeated, the screen will refuse to scroll and Luigi will be stranded on top of the ceiling with no way to get back down, requiring the game to be reset to continue.

Top: during the battle against Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2, if the final hit is dealt to him while his sprite is still flashing from the previous hit, Wart’s sprite will become scrambled as he flies offscreen.

Bottom: a close-up look at the scrambled sprite.

Artwork of Link and Mamu/Wart from a 1994 The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening manga. Mamu from that game is intended to be the same character as Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2 (whose appearance in Link’s Awakening is explained by the dream theme of both games), and the name “Mamu” is also Wart’s name in Japanese. The English version of the game merely left the name untranslated.

Top: as is widely known, the game internationally called Super Mario Bros. 2 is based on a previous Japan-only game called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, but with a number of alterations such as replacing the playable characters with Mario characters. This leads to the fact that nearly every character that is usually thought about as “originating in Super Mario Bros. 2″ (like Birdo, Shy Guy, Snifit, Wart etc.) actually originated in Doki Doki Panic instead. However, there is one exception. The boss of Level 5-3 in Doki Doki Panic is another rematch against Mouser and not an original enemy.

Bottom: in Super Mario Bros. 2, this Mouser was removed and replaced with a boss programmed specifically for this game: Clawgrip. This makes Clawgrip the only character whose first appearance was actually in Super Mario Bros. 2. (Note that some entities changed graphics, such as Mask Gates looking like human masks in Doki Doki Panic and like bird masks in Super Mario Bros. 2, however, only Clawgrip was not a reskin of a previous entity and was programmed in from scratch.)

1987 Japanese print ad for Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the game that was later retooled into Super Mario Bros. 2 for international audiences. While the playable characters and friendly NPCs on the left page were all removed or replaced by Mario and his friends, this ad provides unique artwork of the enemies and bosses that are still present in Super Mario Bros. 2 on the right page.

If the data of Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is modified to activate a “level exit” script in any non-final room of a level, i.e. a room never meant to have such a script activated in it, the player will be transported to this version of Level 1-2 with winter graphics.

While it is likely that this was not specifically programmed in and the level is displayed this way purely coincidentally by reading wrong code, it is notable how it not only uses correct winter graphics from Level 4-3, but also palette-shifts the Level 1-2 palm tree background to have a bluish-green hue as though the trees are covered with frost, adding to the theme despite no such palette actually existing in the game legitimately.
