Top: in the original NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3, the sprites for the magic wands used by the Koopalings have an oddity where the wand appears bent or curved when facing right (third sprite in the top row of the image). This was fixed in the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4 versions (bottom row).

Bottom: how the bent magic wand appears in-game, being visible for a few frames when it is falling down after defeating a Koopaling.

Top: on Page 75 of Nintendo Power’s official 1990 guide for Super Mario Bros. 3, there is an extremely small illustration of Raccoon Mario being grabbed by a Hand Trap in World 8 in the bottom right corner.

Bottom: a scan of the illustration in the highest quality currently available, isolated from the background.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, getting a Super Star power-up temporarily transforms Mario’s jump into a somersault for the duration of its effect. However, two things apply to the somersault jump that may not immediately be obvious:
1. if Mario is in Raccoon or Tanooki form, he can still glide (although the animation does not change during this, and the only visual indication is Mario’s slightly slower descent)
2. whenever the Super Star runs out, if Mario is in the somersault animation, the animation will persist until Mario touches the ground.

This can be combined for the effect seen in the footage, whereby Tanooki Mario jumps before the Super Star runs out, and continues stomping enemies without touching the ground, using the glide move. This results in the unintended visual of Mario seemingly randomly speeding up and slowing down while somersaulting.

In the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3, the game uses a single byte to encode what world the player is currently in, which is used to load world-specific events such as throne rooms containing that world’s king, and letters from Peach received after clearing a world.

If that byte is set to a value larger than the amount of worlds in the game, a common side effect is the game taking the final letter received after clearing World 7 (the one that ends with “Ha ha ha… King of the Koopa”) and displaying it in the corrupted manner shown in the screenshot, so that the letter appears to read “a ha… King of the Koopa”.

Original 1990 Super Mario Bros. 3 store display. Of particular interest is the layout of the logo, with the “Bros.” being aligned with the left edge of the text rather than being underneath the “O” in “Mario” as in the finished game’s logo. An extremely limited amount of cartridges were produced with this early version of the logo; these are known as “Left Bros.” cartridges and are highly sought after by collectors, selling for prices in the thousands of dollars.
