The Korean version of Super Mario 64 DS includes a yellow ! Block on top of Peach’s Castle that is not found in any other version, which produces an unlimited amount of extra lives when struck.

This resembles the functionality provided by Yoshi in the original Super Mario 64, where he would grant Mario 100 lives after collecting 120 stars. However, the block is there from the beginning of the game; if the player manages to get on top of the castle by performing wall jumps, this can be accessed before even entering the first course.

The Big Boo Battle course in Super Mario 64 DS, like most side courses, contains a star that is obtained by collecting 8 red coins. The course consists of a series of rooms, each containing 1 or 2 red coins. The player is expected to collect the coins while going through the rooms the first time through.

However, if the player deliberately ignores the red coin in the first room, then collects the other 7, and finally backtracks to the first room to collect the final coin, the star will spawn twice. Although both stars are legitimate star objects and can be collected separately, the game only adds one star to the counter since the counter uses a checklist to determine which stars have been collected, making the second star a duplicate and thus not counted.

In Super Mario 64 DS, there is a very precise point on the wooden bridge outside Princess Peach’s Castle where, if the player character runs against it, he will continue gaining speed indefinitely, with the running animation becoming faster and faster. After some time, the character model starts to deform from the extreme speed by folding in on itself.

Top: in Super Mario 64 DS, it is possible to get on top of the large brick structure containing the goal portion of the Princess’s Secret Slide area. As Luigi, simply stop the slide in the flat portion after the first tunnel by performing a Ground Pound, and then backwards somersault so that Luigi starts spinning. While spinning, fly to the grey brick roof.

Bottom: this roof is unique due to its surface property whereby all sliding actions continue indefinitely as long as a direction is held. Here, Luigi performs a Slide Kick and is able co continue sliding in a circle forever.

Note that this property is also present in the original Nintendo 64 version of the game, but getting on top of the roof there is possible using only extremely precise jumps not easily performed by the average player.

The model for Balloon Mario in Super Mario 64 DS has Mario’s body modeled separately from his head. While the exact reason has not been confirmed, this may be due to the transformation being more gradual at some point in development, using Balloon Mario’s body with regular Mario’s head, necessitating the separate models (this is how Blimp Yoshi’s model functions in Super Mario Galaxy 2). In the finished game, Mario transforms into Balloon Mario instantly.

In Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi can pass through the mirror in the Snowman’s Land lobby room in Peach’s Castle by using a Power Flower to become Vanish Luigi. If the Power Flower’s effect wears off when Luigi is intersecting the mirror, he and his reflection will overlap each other in the manner depicted. Note that the Luigi turned towards the viewer is the reflection, protruding out of the mirror (note the mirrored L emblem on his cap).

A glitch in Super Mario 64 DS can be used to force the camera to zoom out much farther than normally possible. Simply position the player character on the elevator leading down to Dorrie’s lake in Hazy Maze Cave and enter first-person view. The camera will immediately begin zooming out and continue zooming out until a button is pressed.
