In Super Mario Bros. 2, if the game is paused during a door screen transition just before the door closes, then Up, B and A are pressed simultaneously on Player 2′s controller, the player character will fall through the floor and die. When the level reloads, the player character will again immediately fall through the floor and die, and continue doing this until no lives remain and the game is over.

As is commonly known, the North American Super Mario Bros. 2 was a modified version of the earlier Japanese-only Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. One graphical difference between the games was made specifically to reduce eye strain. The waterfalls in Doki Doki Panic are extremely fast (left) and were slowed down significantly for Super Mario Bros. 2 (right).

The Japanese-only The Legend of Zelda spin-off “Ripened Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love” for the Nintendo DS, a sequel to the Japan/Europe-only “Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland”, contains a segment where one of the four playable characters must be chosen for a minigame (top). This screen’s graphics are taken directly from the character select screen from Super Mario Bros. 2 (bottom).

Top: in the manual of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the game that was eventually modified to become Super Mario Bros. 2, a grey Shy Guy appears. No such Shy Guy is seen in-game, either in the original version or in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Bottom: however, the code for the grey Shy Guy remains in the data and can be activated with cheats. The grey Shy Guy follows the player character, but does not turn around immediately when the player jumps over him; instead, he has a randomized reaction time to make the behavior seem more natural.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, whenever the player pauses the game, the first two channels of the background music (the ones using a square waveform) are muted, while the triangle and noise channel continue playing. These versions of the songs are not available on official soundtracks. Here is the pause screen version of the overworld theme.
