The Super Mario Bros. 3 title screen contains a subtle reference to Super Mario Bros. in the palette of the “3″ in the logo. The number cycles through the exact same colors that the Question Blocks in Super Mario Bros. cycle through. Note that the Question Blocks in Super Mario Bros. 3 itself do not use this palette, so the reference is likely to have been deliberate.
In Level 6-9 of Super Mario Bros. 3, it is possible to skip the entirety of the level by using a glitch to jump over the wall at the start. If Small Mario jumps towards the wall, touches it at exactly the right pixel and the A button is pressed again, he will perform another jump in mid-air and have enough height to get to the top of the wall. From there, going to the right will lead directly to the end of the level. Warning: there is an unseen Koopa Troopa on top of the wall that may kill Mario, so it is best to keep jumping to avoid touching it. (Source)
Artwork from the back cover of the VHS for the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode “Mind your Mummy Mommy, Mario”. Note the mirrored “L” on Luigi’s cap, and Toad’s completely white outfit.
A glitch in Super Mario Bros. 3 allows Mario to defeat Pile Driver Micro-Goombas (the hopping block enemies) in an unintended way by simply ducking under them as they land (left) or merely standing still if he is Small Mario (right). Note that this will not work if Mario is touching a wall. (Footage recorded by me in a NES emulator.)
In Super Mario Bros. 3, if enemies are taken to Boom Boom’s room in one of the fortresses using exploits, Boom Boom’s animations will use a different tileset, resulting in a glitched appearance. (Source)

In Super Mario Bros. 3, letting a Super Mushroom follow Small Mario as he touches the level goal (possible in Level 2-5) will result in unintended behavior once the Super Mushroom touches Mario after the end-of-level scene. Among other irregularities, a sprite of Mario with his head missing will briefly appear on the left of the screen. (Footage recorded by me with a NES emulator.)
