In Super Mario Bros., the first lift platform in World 6-3 has the unique property that it will increase its vertical range indefinitely while it is on screen; different from any other such platform in the game, where the range is fixed instead. Here, Mario is positioned on the platform and after five up-down cycles, the lowest point of its range reaches below the bottom of the screen, causing Mario to die.
In Super Mario Bros., Mario will always defeat enemies that can be defeated by jumping if he is moving downwards, even if the enemy is slightly above him at the moment of contact. Here, Mario falls alongside a Goomba (top: regular speed, bottom: slowed down); even though the Goomba falls slower and Mario’s feet are completely below the Goomba when they touch, the game behaves as though Mario had just stomped the Goomba from above.

In Super Mario Bros., pressing Left and Right simultaneously will make Mario walk backwards. This is not possible on original NES hardware due to the D-Pad’s design not allowing two opposite directions to be pressed at the same time; however, the Nintendo Switch Online version makes it possible due to the Switch’s Joy-Cons having separate directional buttons.
This allows a glitch to happen on the Switch version that is not possible on the NES version: by jumping up a staircase while walking backwards, Mario moves without scrolling the camera, letting him touch the right edge of the screen. If he touches the end-of-level flagpole while that close to the edge, instead of completing the level, he will hang on to the flagpole indefinitely, softlocking the game.
