In Super Mario Bros., beating World 8-4 unlocks a harder mode where, among other changes, Goombas are replaced with Buzzy Beetles. In that mode, there are many opportunities to jump onto a Buzzy Beetle when it is above a bottomless pit, as shown in the footage. Instead of falling, the Buzzy Beetle’s shell will be suspended in midair. If it is allowed to re-emerge, the Buzzy Beetle will continue walking on air and through walls.

In Super Mario Bros., no more than one power-up can be active at any time, which means that if a power-up is spawned while another is already on screen, the previous power-up will simply disappear. Super Mushroom/Fire Flower blocks are spaced out far enough to avoid this issue, but Super Stars can become affected by this during normal gameplay, as shown in the footage.

Extremely rare footage of the South Korean version of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show live-action segments. Most of these have been lost, with very few segments surfacing from private VHS rips occasionally.

Top: the Japanese and US versions of Super Mario Bros. have a one-block gap above the pipe leading out of the water in Worlds 2-2 and 7-2. If Mario is in Super or Fire form, it is very easy to get stuck in the wall by ducking on the ground and then swimming into the gap. Mario will get sucked into the rocks and be unable to escape, with the only option being to wait until the time runs out to restart the level.

Bottom: in the European release, Nintendo has corrected the error in the simplest way possible. Rather than patch out the glitch that results in Mario being sucked into the wall (it can still be performed in other places in that version), the developers simply added a block to close the gap.

From a Japanese Super Mario Bros. picture book. Note the Fire Flower’s design; throughout the Mario series, the Fire Flower has never looked this elaborate.

Top: the only official artwork of Silver Luigi that has been released by Nintendo as an image file in a press kit. As you can see, Silver Luigi is largely obscured by Gold Mario. No standalone image of Silver Luigi was released.

Bottom: However, Silver Luigi appears unobscured in a single piece of artwork; seen on the inside of the New Super Mario Bros. 2 box. A high-resolution photograph of it was provided to me by twitter.com user “Nintendle”. This image is currently the most high-quality image of Silver Luigi available on the Internet.

Illustration from a cover of a Japanese guide for Super Mario Bros. Note that Mario’s cap symbol is “SM” instead of “M”; presumably for “Super Mario”.
