Whenever Yoshi is left alone in Super Mario Galaxy 2, he will vibrate slightly. Since he oscillates about 30 times per second and the movement is minuscule, this is hard to see when playing the game on a console. Here it is zoomed in and slowed down.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, we can see the planet most of Mario’s adventures take place on from space. On the bottom left is the planet’s texture as seen on the map that connects the worlds, on the bottom right the texture as seen on the World 1 map. Since these do not match up geographically, this raises more questions than it answers.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Whomp King has a unique facial expression during the cutscene after he is defeated. Since he is lying face down at that point, this is normally impossible to see. Here is what it looks like from below.
You’ve probably heard of the three mysterious figures that appear to be watching Mario from a cliff in the skybox of Shiverburn Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Looking behind the cliff, we can see there are actually four of them, since it’s just two instances of the same texture depicting two.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, if you approach the big fruit at the end of the first section of Yoshi Star Galaxy with Yoshi, then let him eat it and quickly activate the Launch Star that appears while the fruit is still inside Yoshi’s mouth, then his cheeks will be puffed during the flying cutscene.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, touching a Star while riding Yoshi while being attacked by a Smeech will result in the Smeech staying on Yoshi’s nose during the victory cutscene.
Easter egg in Super Mario Galaxy 2: the cloud used in the skybox of Starshine Beach Galaxy is actually taken from the Delfino Plaza skybox in Super Mario Sunshine and mirrored.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, a programming oversight results in a glitch that creates an enormous dark orb in Melty Monster Galaxy. Simply go into the pipe to the Chimp’s room in any mission, then back out. If you use first-person view, you will see a giant sphere occupying a large part of the level. This is actually the skybox from the Chimp’s room seen from outside - an error causes it to not unload when exiting the room.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, beating a mission with Luigi unlocks Luigi’s ghost for that mission, which will speedrun through the course if activated and give the player something to compete against. The ghost is unique among the characters in the game in that it never unloads and remains active even if the planet it’s standing on has unloaded.
