The data for Super Mario Galaxy contains an unused Spiny enemy that was intended to appear underwater. The top left image is its appearance while standing still, while the others are its animations. While some animations seem to be intact, others are unfinished, resulting in the model moving around in a chaotic manner.

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario will normally fall asleep if no input is made for one minute. However, during boss battles, instead of falling asleep, he will assume a battle stance instead. This is due to an invisible object, called “NonSleepArea” internally, that envelops the boss arenas.

The NonSleepArea is usually larger than the boss arena, so that it also covers platforms adjacent to it. In the top picture, Mario is just outside the cutoff point for the NonSleepArea before the Bouldergeist battle in the Ghostly Galaxy, so he is able to fall asleep.

In the bottom picture, moving only slightly to another point on the platform puts Mario inside the NonSleepArea, where he is unable to sleep despite the boss battle not having yet started.

In Super Mario Galaxy, there is a ring of six Star Bits floating in space, not connected to any planetoids or flight paths, in Honeyhive Galaxy.
There is an unused Launch Star that can be activated by setting a flag in the code to “on” that appears...

In Super Mario Galaxy, there is a ring of six Star Bits floating in space, not connected to any planetoids or flight paths, in Honeyhive Galaxy.

There is an unused Launch Star that can be activated by setting a flag in the code to “on” that appears next to the starting point of the galaxy. If Mario launches from it, he will fly through the Star Bit ring, but then, just as he is preparing to land, he will instead enter a death zone and lose a life.

From this, we can assume there was a planetoid at some point in development that the Launch Star would be used to access; however, the planetoid itself was replaced with a death zone, the Launch Star was set to “off”, and only the Star Bit ring remains visible in-game as evidence.

The first four notes of the xylophone intro section of the Ghostly Galaxy music in Super Mario Galaxy, before the main melody starts, spell out “D-E-A-D”. Below is the relevant part isolated alongside a guide on how to read the lowest octave in the treble clef. Whether this is a coincidence or a deliberate reference to the nature of the level is unknown.

Near the beginning of Super Mario Galaxy, the Star Festival is attacked by Bowser’s fleet of airships. Moving Mario to the circular area at the shore of the lake and jumping reveals that one of the airships is programmed to not have any animation.

Note the airship closer to Mario, near the right edge of the screen: its propellers are rotating. However, the airship to the left, further back, has completely stationary propellers and appears to be frozen in mid-air. This is due to the camera normally not panning up enough to show the propellers and the developers failing to account for the fact that the camera follows Mario when he jumps, revealing the non-functional propellers.

Top left: in the Bowser’s Star Reactor galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, there are four airships hovering outside of the playable area. They can be seen during some camera turns and in first-person perspective mode and are not accessible for Mario.

Top right: by moving the camera, we can see that one of those airships has a fully modeled interior, despite not being able to be visited.

Bottom left: this is because these airships are actually reused assets from the second mission of Space Junk Galaxy, Kamella’s Airship Attack, only rearranged slightly in relation to each other.

Bottom right: during that mission, it is possible to visit the inside of one of the airships, which explains the unused interior in Bowser’s Star Reactor.

Top: in Super Mario Galaxy and in Super Mario 64, when Mario is flattened by a Thwomp, his model is deformed by shortening it along the vertical axis.

Middle: the Super Mario Galaxy model is reduced to 20% of its height.

Bottom: the Super Mario 64 model is reduced to 6% of its height.
