In Super Mario Galaxy, touching the Dark Matter in Bowser’s Dark Matter Plant causes Mario to disintegrate. For this effect, the game obscures Mario’s model with particles. Moving the camera around the obstruction, we can see that to counteract the increased strain on the graphical processing caused by the particle effect, Mario’s model is simplified during the cutscene by having its hands and face removed.
In Super Mario Galaxy, if Mario swims close to the glass walls of Buoy Base Galaxy, his reflection will be visible in the glass. Zooming in, we can see that the reflection is an unshaded copy of Mario floating outside the wall. The copy has a few differences from the original: it always has its fists clenched and never blinks.
In Super Mario Galaxy, when Mario turns into Spring Mario, the part of his body that would be covered by the spring is replaced with a black spiral that visually connects the coils.
Due to the high amount of polygons in the models used by the Gearmo robots in Super Mario Galaxy, they have two low-polygon models, while most other NPCs only have one. In particular, the rounded teeth of the gears in the high-polygon model are a strain on the game’s engine, so they are replaced with square teeth when the Gearmo is not viewed from up close, and 2D cutout teeth when it is far away.
In Super Mario Galaxy, it is possible to enter Sweet Sweet Galaxy without using the Launch Star that is normally required to access it. Once you talk to the Luma that activates the Launch Star, ignore it and get the Flying Mario power-up instead. Above the area with the Toads you can then find the entrance to the galaxy, which activates when Mario flies into it.

In Super Mario Galaxy, whenever Mario drowns in a swamp, his hand reaches out from under the surface before being sucked in. However, since Mario’s head is so big, he cannot raise his hand above the surface without his head being still visible. To solve this, the game simply shrinks Mario’s head so it doesn’t interfere with the animation.
