In one particular piece of official art for Super Mario Odyssey, Mario’s hair is rendered in great detail. Zooming in to the part above his ear, we can see what appears to be a single gray hair. This seems to be deliberate, as analysis of the image reveals that this is not a transparency issue, but that the hair is indeed colored a lighter color than the rest. Due to the image being released in a lossless format by Nintendo, this also could not be a compression artifact.
In Super Mario Odyssey, Purple Coins (shown here in their triangular Sand Kingdom variety) are normally a vibrant purple color, as seen in the top image. However, inside 2D segments, the coins are depicted as blue instead. This might be a reference to the fact that Super Mario Bros. on the NES, after which Super Mario Odyssey’s 2D segments are styled, does not contain the color purple among any of its graphical assets.
During one of the Super Mario Odyssey segments at the Nintendo Treehouse event at E3 2017, Mario was able to take control of a certain tree in the Deep Woods section of the Steam Gardens level. The tree’s visual appearance is a reference to the design of the trees from Level 3-1 of Super Mario 3D World, shown below.
In the Super Mario Odyssey trailer, Mario’s new nose jiggle physics are visible as he runs and performs various actions. Here are some examples of the deformation of his nose during gameplay.
In what is most likely a complete coincidence, a limited-edition shirt depicting a scene similar to the beginning of the Super Mario Odyssey trailer was sold by Nintendo in September 2014.
In the Super Mario Odyssey trailer, the people in black suits in New Donk City seem to dissolve when Mario approaches them. Note that the only people Mario has been shown to be able to approach closely in the trailer are people in gray suits, which could mean all people in black suits will have that property.
During a brief segment of the Super Mario Odyssey trailer, an object resembling a tendril or other moving appendage seems to disappear behind the trees to the left of Mario.
