In Super Mario Odyssey, whenever Mario is a certain distance away from the camera, his pupils become smaller, leading to his irises appearing slightly brighter. Whenever Snapshot Mode is entered, though, his pupils become the correct size again. The difference can be seen by quickly toggling between gameplay and Snapshot Mode. (The same effect applies to Cappy and other characters with similar eyes.)

Top: a page from the Japanese official guide for Super Mario All-Stars, introducing World 3 of Super Mario Bros. 3, Water Land. Below the map is a caption naming the world; it is called “海の国” (”Umi no Kuni”), meaning “Sea Country”.

Middle: a frame from a Japanese trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, showing the Seaside Kingdom. In the upper left corner, the location’s name is displayed, it is also called “海の国”.

Bottom: the two names for comparison. While the name “Sea Country” is simple enough that naming two unrelated locations this way could be a coincidence, Super Mario Odyssey does reference Super Mario Bros. 3 deliberately in other ways (the Slots minigame music, the Rocket Flower sound effect and the Jizo statue design), so that there is at least a possibility of the developers having intended Water Land and Seaside Kingdom to be the same location.

Super Mario Odyssey contains an unused speech synthesis function for some of the friendly species in the game. Bubblainians, Steam Gardeners, Volbonans and Tostarenans each have a list of 81 syllables - the ones most common in Japanese - that they can pronounce independently and string into words. In the finished game, this is not used - the species in question merely say random syllables from the list of available ones.

In this recording, I use the files to synthesize the characters saying “Supa Mario” (as “Super Mario” is pronounced in Japanese). In order, the voices are: male Bubblainian, female Bubblainian, Steam Gardener, large Volbonan, small Volbonan, and Tostarenan. You may notice the Tostarenan sounding completely unlike the ones in the game; this is due to the speech synthesis feature for that species being entirely unused and replaced with completely different, high-pitched sound files in the release version.

Comparison between the complexities of Mario’s first in-game 3D model from Super Mario 64 and his most complex model to date, from Super Mario Odyssey. With 14,375 triangles, the Super Mario Odyssey model is over 17 times more complex than the Super Mario 64 model with 838 triangles. In fact, there are roughly half as many triangles in the mustache of Super Mario Odyssey’s model as there are in the entire Super Mario 64 model.

The data for Super Mario Odyssey contains this unused animation of Pauline walking while wearing her concert dress. In the finished game, she does not move around during the New Donk City festival. Please note that the wrong coloration and missing parts of the model are a limitation of the rendering engine used to access the files, and are not indicative of how the model would have appeared in-game. Luigi’s model in Super Mario Odyssey differs from other Luigi models in the fact that the “L” emblem on his cap is not a texture applied to the cap or even a part of the cap’s model, but its own separate object that is superimposed onto the cap. Removing the emblem shows that the shadow from the emblem is part of the cap’s texture.

Comparison between Mario’s tropical shirt from Super Mario Sunshine (left) and its appearance as a downloadable outfit in Super Mario Odyssey (right). While the placement of the Shine Sprites in the Super Mario Odyssey design appears to be identical to the original at first glance, one Shine Sprite has been added to the back of Mario’s left sleeve that was not present before, thereby making the redesign not entirely faithful. In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario casts his shadow in a different direction from all other characters. While non-playable characters have a shadow that conforms to the light source present in the area and thus is cast at a realistic angle, Mario’s shadow is always cast straight down, as though he was lit from directly above. In addition, Mario’s shadow is much darker than all other shadows.
