2002 Super Mario Sunshine preview animated via the Mario in Real Time system, which tracked Charles Martinet’s head movement as he voiced Mario. This version of the system was the first one that tracked Martinet’s eyebrows separately, allowing Mario to make an incredulous expression as seen here.

In Super Mario Sunshine, performing a Spin Jump into a climbable fence will result in Mario briefly grabbing onto the fence with the wrong orientation, making it appear as though he is holding on to air. After 6 frames, the function responsible for Mario’s animations reevaluates Mario’s orientation, notices the error, and snaps him back to the actual fence.

In the first mission of Ricco Harbor in Super Mario Sunshine, “Gooper Blooper Breaks Out”, there is an invisible barrel near the start of the level that only appears once the boss battle against Gooper Blooper begins. If Mario leaves the boss and backtracks to the beginning of the level, jumping in the spot shown in the footage will cause Mario to appear to stand in mid-air.
The barrel only has collision at the top and not at the sides, meaning it cannot be picked up and only functions as an invisible platform.

In the fifth episode of Bianco Hills in Super Mario Sunshine, it is required to shoot a Poink at Petey Piranha, who is sleeping on a normally unreachable column in a river, to wake him up and begin the boss battle. However, it is possible to get Mario onto the platform by using the Rocket Nozzle and a dive from the raised platforms near the river in the manner depicted. While Petey Piranha does have collision in his sleeping state, it is impossible to wake him using anything other than a Poink, meaning there is no gameplay-relevant benefit to doing this.

The file size of the Super Mario Sunshine disc is 1,425,760 KB or 1.35 gigabytes. The video files used for the game’s prerendered cutscenes, such as Mario’s trial and imprisonment at the beginning of the game, are saved as .thp files in the file system.
Extracting all the video files and adding their sizes together gives us 874,588 KB, or 834 megabytes. This means that 61.34%, or almost two thirds, of the disc is taken up by the cutscenes.
