In Super Mario Sunshine, by pressing R after talking to a character while riding Yoshi, it’s possible to let Yoshi spit juice in the middle of talking to them.
Textures used for the different kinds of Goop in Super Mario Sunshine. These are tileable horizontally and vertically. The last texture is an unused type of Goop only seen in beta videos, but which still remains in the game’s files.
In the first mission of Pinna Park in Super Mario Sunshine, Shadow Mario is visible on the other side of the park’s gate at the beginning. Zooming in, we can see that Shadow Mario is standing on a block rather than on the ground. This is because Shadow Mario has gravity physics and can only stand on solid surfaces, but the area inside the park does not have collision while Mario is in the beach portion of the level. In addition, the block is slightly too small and causes Shadow Mario’s leg to slide off intermittently.
The water in Super Mario Sunshine is not in fact transparent. The surface of the water is overlaid with a snapshot of what’s under it, then that picture is distorted to simulate rippling. By disabling the game’s ability to create snapshots of the screen, we can see the true appearance of the water: black and opaque.
In Super Mario Sunshine, the Toads in Delfino Plaza are always seen worrying about Peach after her kidnapping. However, their expressions only become distraught when Mario approaches. As long as he is far away, their faces are happy.
Beta footage from Super Mario Sunshine showing an early, brighter-looking version of Hotel Delfino. The same room in the final version is shown below.
In Super Mario Sunshine, if you jump into a Shine Sprite while holding R to spray water, FLUDD will be performing the spray animation in the following cutscene, causing it to clip through Mario’s head.
Super Mario Sunshine employs an atmospheric haze effect that renders distant objects blurry. The way this is done by the game’s engine is by placing a giant translucent rectangle some distance away from Mario, and filling it with a filtered, blurred image of whatever is behind it.
