Officially licensed 1991 set of Mario dominoes from the Netherlands. For unknown reasons, instead of using default official artwork of these characters, Luigi is depicted on a motorcycle and Bowser is holding a key.

Prototype title screen theme for Mario Kart 64, used in the November 1995 version that was still called “Super Mario Kart R”. The style of this track is drastically different from anything heard in the finished game.

Unused animations for Mario’s skeleton found in the data of Super Mario Galaxy 2. In the finished game, Mario’s skeleton briefly replaces his regular model when he is hit with electricity and has no animations of its own; these animations suggest the skeleton model was intended to be used more prominently at some point during development.

Left: since its founding, the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, Texas contained this Mario statue in the entrance area.
Right: however, in January 2020, it was demolished and replaced with a larger sculpture depicting not only Mario, but also other famous video game characters.

In the data of Super Mario 64, an unused model and behavior for a Blargg enemy from Super Mario World exist. If the code is modified, the Blargg can be made to appear. It has no textures, but in-engine coloring gives it red skin and white teeth. Unfortunately, it has no behavior other than performing its attack animation in place. Mario cannot defeat it and will be hurt on contact.

Unused early version of the intro story theme from Paper Mario, found in the game’s data. The first part of it was repurposed in the finished game as one of the tracks that plays when Peach’s Castle is rescued.
