In the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (also known as The Lost Levels), Mario’s fireballs can pass through corners between diagonally arranged tiles.
Super Mario Sunshine employs an atmospheric haze effect that renders distant objects blurry. The way this is done by the game’s engine is by placing a giant translucent rectangle some distance away from Mario, and filling it with a filtered, blurred image of whatever is behind it.
